Opening title sequence of Bridget Jones Diary

The opening sequence of Bridget Jones, starts by setting the scene the first character you see is the leading lady 'Bridget Jones' you know this when the character walks towards the camera and as she walks there is a voice over presumably Bridget's voice, you know this when the reactions on Bridget's face alter to what is being said so it shows the relation. When Bridget walks towards the screen it cross-fades out to a medium long shot where you see a snowy setting with a church sitting in the background, this particular place is very relevant through out the story. As Bridget Jones walks into the camera there are two couples who appear to be romantically linked and with the church in the background these things all show love and affection which is completely the opposite to what Bridget Jones says when she talks about how long she has been single this shows a contrast in her life to everyone else's also the snowy weather sets a romantic location, you then go on to see two hedges shaped like swans kissing which shape a love heart these are all symbols of love something that Bridget doesn't have.

The next character introduced is her mother, Bridget speaks about her before she enters the house but what is interesting is to see Bridget's commentating through out the next piece and to hear her opinion of what she would really like to be saying which contrasts with what she is saying. Its clear her mother is a stereotypical mother always looking out for you, but doesn't quite realise when she says certain comments they can be taken as an insult but she still remains innocent and highly embarrassing which adds to the comedy factor. The mother seems well presented and talks in a very posh voice to suggest her authority, its clear that money is a big thing for Bridget's mother because when Bridget is told about Mark she is straight away informed by her mother that he earns a lot of money this suggests that maybe Bridget's family may not be as wealthy as you think.

When Bridget enters Downstairs she is centre screen and two men have there back turned two her this represents Bridget's more physical beauty and how she isn't being seen in a attractive way and also mainly down to the fact that what she is wearing is not the most nicest of outfits, but this is where the comedy factor more comes in, it isn't a silly comedy its more of a cleaver comedy with Bridget's view on how she looks and how she interpret-ates the situation that makes the scene more captivating. You meet a series of family members which she has a view on each of them, the family members that she talks about are ones that the audience can relate to because when Bridget talks she sort of stereotypes them.

Her father is the 5th person we meet this might show his authority in the film with the mother being far more dominant and the father being the more laid back. You can sense that the Father is doing something he really doesn't want to be doing as he describes it as 'Torture' at the same time he is smoking and drinking out of a bottle of wine this shows how the family aren't quite as well spoken, well mannered, well behaved as the mother makes out. With Bridget's mother trying the 'set her up' implies that maybe her mother thinks she is incapable of her doing it her self or can also imply that her mother is ready for her to have a family there fore she is being pushy and trying to make her get on with it.

When Bridget gets introduced to Mark Bridget soon draws the conclusion that he is defiantly not the man for her, the camera shots look up to Mark and down on Bridget this shows class as its clear Mark does come from a very well off back ground, and looks down on Bridget which is later backed up by some comments, the scene then pauses and switches to a new less romantic location and you can here a a very relevant song starting in the background with lyrics that say 'All by myself' which is what Bridget is and it reflects her life at that moment in the film. From this point the film titles appear on screen and the font that its done in is scribbled down like a diary as though someone wrote it, it is also in the colour of pink, this colour links to lust and romance but also it is a recurring colour in this film.

Here watch the opening title for yourself:
